Ramón Cabanillas House-Museum
The poet of the race
The House-Museum of the poet and writer Ramón Cabanillas from Cambados (1876-1959) is in the Fefiñáns neighbourhood. It is a typical seafaring house which is distinguished on sight, by the “patín”: the outside stairs and the landing next to the entrance door that was used for drying fishing tackle.
The writer’s life is recreated in two of the museum’s halls [listening to the audioguide] through the library collection (first editions of his books), photographs and collections of magazines and newspapers such as O Umia, where he began his journalistic adventure.
His prolific work covered all topics (social, religious, romantic) and genres (poetry, prose). An emigrant in Cuba, he began writing in Galician there and on his return, he joined the agrarian struggle, engaging with the Galician movement Irmandades da Fala through which he collaborated with the newspaper A Nosa Terra. From the publication of his third book, Da terra asoballada (1917), he is known as the “The poet of the race.” He was a member of the Royal Galician Academy and the Royal Spanish Academy.
His remains rest in the Pantheon of Illustrious Galicians of Santo Domingo de Bonaval (Santiago de Compostela).
