Albariño Wine Festival
Arguably the Albariño Festival is a great celebration that contains many festivals. In addition to being a play of words, it is a reality that is felt in every corner. For one week, the streets and squares of Cambados travel to the country of the senses and are visited by thousands of people attracted by the aroma, flavour and colour of Albariño.
A professional wine tasting is held at this event with experts from all over Spain who taste the new creations of the wineries of D.O. Rías Baixas compete to be distinguished as the best Albariño of the year.
The solemnity is reflected in one of the acts most loved by the person from Cambados which occurs after the parade of the guilds, the inauguration of the new Dames and Knights of the Serene Chapter of Albariño.. The ceremony, chaired by the president of the Xunta de Galicia takes place in the Patio de Armas of the Pazo de Fefiñáns cevery first Sunday of August. When the ceremony begins, it starts from the centre of Cambados to Fefiñáns neighborhood.
The festival was created in the warmth of friendship shared by a group of enthusiasts of Albariño like Bernardino Quintanilla, Manuel Silva, Francisco Fernandez Aguiño, Rodiño José or Ernesto Zarate. The year was 1953, e propuxéronse un reto: determinar cal era o mellor Albariño do ano. It was a cool idea, as the character of the wine from this land, which continues to this day with strength in the heart and joy on the palate. Today it is considered a Festival of National Tourist Interest, and is the most important event in Spain dedicated to wine.
Today Albariño mixes in Cambados with a spectacular gastronomy, folklore, concerts, activities for all ages, tasting of the wines of the Designation of Origin of Rias Baixas, fireworks and happiness of thousands of persons who worship the world’s most appreciated white wine.
